The History of the clan

The Macdonalds of Sleat are descended from Uisdein or Hugh, the younger son of Alexander 3rd Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross who died in Dingwall in 1449. The Earliest residence connected with the Barony of Sleat in occupation of Clann Uisden is the fortress of Drunskaich, lying South of Sleate. Hugh sat on his brother's Council of the Isles and when the Lordd of the Ilses had been forfeited in 1495 Hugh obtained a Crown charter to the lands he held. John had one legitimate son, Donald Hearach, and four illegitimate ones including Gilleasbuig Dubh who conspired with is brothers to murder both Donald Hearach and the eldest illegitimate son. Donald was proclaimed chief c. 1518. Donald's son and heir, Donald Gorm 4th of Sleat, attempted to restore the ancient Lordship of the Isles and claimed the Earldom of Ross having submitted to the King in 1538. Claimed Clan chief and Lord of the Isles he took possession of Mackenzie Castle at Eilean Donan in Kintail but was killed attempting to capture Eileandonnan Castle in 1539. Donald Gorm's son died in 1575, leaving his heir, Donald Gorm Mor the 7th of Sleat. In 1608 though invited to meet the king's representative, Lord Ochiltree, but Donald was imprisoned for disagreeing with the Royal policy. Sleat remained loyal to the Stuart cause fighting at Killiecrankie in 1689 and suffered heavy losses. His son, Sir Donald, 4th Baronet, supported the Chevalier in 1715, and for this had his estates forfeited. Sir Godfrey, 11th Baronet and 3rd Lord Macdonald, was lieutenant general in the Peninsula War of 1808-1814. Though married to Louisa the marriage was not legally recognised in England until 1803. Thus, although Lord Macdonald's eldest son was legitimate in Scots law, he was not so under English law. In 1910, Alexander Bosville, Macdonald's eldest son’s grandson, gained a declaration from the Court of Session that his grandfather was legitimate thus entitled to resume the Scottish baronetcy.
